This South Coast Rep production of Doubt offers us a great resource: their meaty program. It is chock-full of interesting information. I have attached the pdf.
I think the section in the program titled "When in Doubt-or, When? In 'Doubt'" is great for establishing a social context for the play. I've uploaded a picture of that page here, in case you don't feel like looking at the whole pdf.
